Popsicle Stick Color Sorting
Color sorting sure is fun when you have these cute little milk bottles to work with! I found these on a whim when I was Christmas shopping a few years back, looking to have these cute little milk glasses set out with Christmas morning cinnamon rolls and cute little red and white straws, ah the memories! Maybe they’ll have to make a comeback this Christmas!
For now, they have been repurposed for color sorting these days and Emery has been a big fan! I found the exact same glasses on amazon here and colored popsicle sticks here. I cut out construction paper with the corresponding colors and taped them on the glasses.
Depending on the age of the child, perhaps for a younger child, I would introduce two colors and build up from there. Too many colors at once can be overwhelming, leading to frustration and loss of interest. As always, when I present a new activity, we take it to her work mat or table and I show her slowly, with as little wording as possible, how it is done. Once that is complete, I sit back and let her work, withholding any correction or interruption to allow her to concentrate. If she misplaces them, I let them be, noting to myself to reinforce the colors at a neutral time. This activity helps builds concentration and hand eye coordination by putting the popsicle sticks into the smaller opening.
Often times I use a variety of natural wooden trays and baskets for her shelves to add variety and texture, these are some that have been great: here, here.
What do you have around the house that could be repurposed for color sorting? Paint sticks, rocks, cut strips of colored paper, pipe cleaners? What about cutting and painting cardboard strips from all those amazon boxes? 😉 I love how there are so many opportunities for simple activities like these, if you just look around the house and see what can be repurposed!
Happy color sorting!
