Flower arranging is one of the sweetest things I have presented for Emery. I found the idea in a Montessori Services catalogue and figured we had most of the supplies on hand, including some flowers from my hubby on the counter just waiting to be re-arranged! Emery, 19 months at the time, was a little too young for the whole sequence, so I modified it a bit for her. I presented the flowers pre-cut on the tray, a small towel, a vase with some water already poured, and a cute little paper napkin I cut to serve as a defined area to place the vase when the arrangement was complete. Kept it simple! As I sat back to watch, I couldn’t help but be in awe; watching her create something beautiful to her, for her environment, to enjoy. She held such concentration and took such care in placing, and re-placing…and re-placing the flowers over and over for several minutes (which in toddler time-is pretty good!).
For an older toddler or young child, I would present the tray with scissors and the flowers to be cut, a small pitcher of water and funnel if needed, a clear vase and a small towel to wipe up any spills.
What I love about the Montessori method is that practical life skills can come from things you do and have in your home, just modified for tiny hands! Do you have any mason jars, small clear glasses that could be used as a vase? What about fresh cut flowers, herbs, or tree trimmings that could be arranged for a beautiful display? Look around, gather the materials and let those little hands create!
Love,
Mama M
